@dmk_calgary thank you for the link! Sound 6 out of 11. That’s definitely not great!
@mahler123 I have located this version (at least I think it’s this) on Tidal and will give it a listen. It’s part of a set
Haitink Mahler 5 on DECCA Pure Analog
Almost bought this but figured I ask if anyone has heard this reissue.
From product notes…
For this release Rainer Maillard at Emil Berliner Studios has used the original, four-track quadraphonic master tape to make a new stereo mix sent directly to the cutter head. This preserves a pure analogue path throughout. The Philips engineers of the 1970s would similarly have mixed the four front and rear channels before cutting but this downmix would have resulted in a two-track stereo copy for mastering, whereas here the lacquer is cut directly from a ’live’ mix into stereo from the four Quad channels.
Any feedback on the quality of recording and vinyl?

yeah, I just checked discogs for LPs from the original. Most are in Europe and rang from 10-20 Euros, and so when shipping gets factored in it might be not that much cheaper than the new Decca issue. I have been stimulated by this thread to wish that I could hear both the new and old LP issues, but I won’t be buying either |
I’ve listened to part of the Haitink Concertgebouw 5th in the car on the way to work this morning. Not the best interpretation of the 5th, not the best recording quality. I’m still not 100% convinced it’s the same version but it’s DECCA so that’s probably it. |
I concur. I am actually surprised that I have accumulated so many versions of this recording, although the BluRay and the CD versions were part of larger purchases, and I bought the SACD when that format was new and I didn’t have any multichannel Mahler 5 at the time. I’ve had a soft spot for BH in Mahler 5 because he introduced me to the piece in a concert, and if there were no other recording available I could live with it, but we are so spoiled for choice |
@mahler123 this is prompting me to go back to my CD rips and explore versions I’ve not heard before on streaming. So there is a positive to this discussion Thank you all for chiming in! |
