LG vs. Sony 65” OLED

I’ve had both LG G and C models for the past twelve years, which have been rock solid with ink-like blacks. In between, we had a Sony XBR LED which had poor blacks and a user interface that seemed dated compared to LG’s. I’ve heard great things about some of Sony OLED models, but at the time of research two years ago LG seemed to be more consistent with performance across their lineup per RTINGS.com. Again, I think it really depends on the model and whether you’ll be using something like the AppleTV (highly recommended) or the televisions apps. 

LG. Latest is slightly better and price wise as wuch 

LG has been a class leader for awhile now with thier mini pixel technologies and bigger processors , you have to watch Sony at the stores , my friend is a manager there. If you try to bring your own blu ray to compare normally no.

for Sony pays a advertising contract in the U.S and many times partially calibrated 

and a super high Rez bluray demo is used .. please remember All tv sets are not close to optimal at the store they just throw up the color temp and contrast .

myself spent the $400 and have my Set professionally calibrated it takes 3-4 hours 

but we’ll worth it  do it it 3-4 years , buy a good blu ray player like the Panasonic for $1k , and optical cable I bought a AQ vodka and gives nice picture ,and use the hdmi out into your tv for sound .

I have both brands.  If you have a "light-challenged" room I would tend to favor LG over Sony.  If not, picture quality will be so close I would choose based on aesthetics and price.  Current models have so many adjustment options there is extreme overlap between major name brands.   I also believe both brands readily mirror images if that's important to you. 

We bought a Sony 77 OLED from Best Buy last year. In store we compared LG and Sony OLEDs (we had a LG OLED 65 before) running the same programs, and we liked Sony a little better. Of course, I had no idea what kind of adjustments they have made.

The guy asked us what type of programs we watched more. I told them streaming Netflix, Amazon, Apple TV, and Disney+. He recommended Sony. Again, I did not know if Sony was indeed better. He also said watching cable TV there was no difference between the two brands. 

I was a die-hard Sony guy for years then I realized I've never had one that lasted more than 5 years. After reading numerous positive professional reviews I decided it was time to try the new "budget" brands. We moved to a new house 2 1/2 yrs ago and needed several new tvs. I treated myself to a LG C4 OLED for the bedroom and then three of the Hisense U8's in 55",65" and 100". This was Hisense's top of the line model at the time and they are mini-leds. The OLED was literally almost double the price of the U8's and to be sure, it's an excellent tv. But honestly, the U8's are the ones that frequently catch me thinking "wow, that looks fantastic". The 100" obviously loses a bit of image quality from the smaller ones but everyone that sees it is still pretty blown away by how good a screen that big can look. The LG has come down in price since then, in fact the C5 is less than I paid for the C4. The Hisense has actually gone up $100 for the 65" size. Not sure if that's reflective of a new confidence of the brand in the market or what. So the price difference is not as great as it was and if you've got to have an OLED then I get it. But if I had to buy another tv now I promise you it would be another Hisense U8, or possibly their new UR9, which costs more than any of the mid-grade OLEDS. 

As an aside, Sony just handed over all of their TV production to TCL. They formed a new company that TCL owns 51% of. Sony will still develop their own processing, etc. I have never seen a TCL that impressed me much but I haven't looked in a few years. They may have some higher-end models that are quite impressive like Hisense does.
