Shunyata Venon V16 or Furman Elite 20pfi

So I currently have a Furman Elite 20pfi with everything in my rig (system does double duty for music and HT) plugged into it. Including the Puron AC Power Conditioner (this thing absolutely lowered the noise floor when I plugged it into the Furman). I took advantage of the 40% off sale and bought the V16. Received it yesterday. However I see that the V16 does not offer surge protection whereas the Furman does. I did not realize this. I should mention I have my system on a dedicated 20Amp circuit and I also have a whole house surge protector. Is this a deal breaker, should I just return the Shunyata? I did read, almost unanimously, that the V16 will improve the sound and lower cross interference by isolating.
Thoughts? And should the V16 not offering surge protection be a deal breaker?

I can't opine on the V16, but I have Shunyata Sigma NR v1 PC's on my pre, DAC and amp, all plugged into a Shunyata Everest. We had a lightning strike on our generator that fed back into the main panel, which was supposedly protected by a whole house surge protector, because of the way the surge protector was wired, it did not work. The strike fried my HVAC system (bad in Miami in the summer), but nothing touched my stereo system! So I can't say whether that was fully due to the Everest, random luck, or some other anomaly in the house, but everything was protected! |
@moto_man so sorry to hear this! Wow! You’d think the whole house surge protector would keep everything safe as kittens. Though I did just kind of recently discover they only last about 5 years. I had no idea I thought they were good forever. I’ve had mine for 7 years now… Thanks for sharing about the Shunyata. It had to be the difference, what else could explain it? I’m in NH and we don’t get anywhere near the heavy duty storms like FL. But we get our share…great to hear your system is in tact sorry to hear about the HVAC…good luck, hope it’s not too costly to repair…

@kingbr, I discovered that the surge protector is supposed to be wired in between the meter and the top of the main panel. Mine was apparently wired at the bottom of the pane and the generator transfer switch went into the main panel first. So when the lightning strike hit the generator, the surge went through the transfer switch, burning that out and then into the panel (or something like that . . . I'm no electrician). But it was covered by insurance. But I can say that my system emerged completely unscathed, so it's just another reason why I like the Everest. And FYI, at least for me, the Everest was like a component upgrade . . . I was pretty surprised. Highly recommended, Since the "new and improved" Everest has come out, you may be able to get a decent deal on the original one! |
