Battle of the phone pres for my system.

I have a Yamaha GT-750 with a Hana SH mk 1. I had it running into my Musical Fidelity A1 and listened through Dynaudio Evoke 20 speakers. I have tinnitus so I listen off-axis and liked the sound. I had ordered a Decware Zrock3 and hadn't considered when I ordered it how I was going to use it. When if finally came, I realized I could only use it with my transport and DAC )and it was worth every penny.)

A friend lent me their Manley Chinook so I could see how it would work with my analog front end and the Manley/Decware combo was pretty sweet. I can't afford a Manley and after removing the Zrock3 and going head to head with the A1 didn't make me feel that I wouldn't choose it anyway. After casting about, I was all set on getting a 834 clone and putting in some nice tubes. Then I read about the Softone Model 4 and saw systems like @lalitk and @macg19 . It sounds like what I would want if I put some Mullards in it (though hopefully cheaper ones). I ran across many others who could afford a more expensive phono pre using the Softtone.

As I was searching, the google AI wanted to help so bad that I asked it what it thought. It said the Softone would match better with my equipment and gave a bunch of reasons that were things I hadn't thought of, like gain matching and cumulative power running through the system. It seemed to think that 834 would be more problematic and too much syrup.

I told AI to make the 834 work or I would delete it from the internet, and it told me to put a 5751 (less gain because of the Hana's output coming in) in V1, then a Raytheon then a Mullard. Or something like that for gain and sound differences taking into account my tinnitus and to match my system. It seemed sound thinking, but again, stuff I hadn't considered. I didn't write it down, but it made me wonder. It congratulated me on my awesome thinking on putting together my amazing system. I closed the browser to make it forget this ever happened.

I figured I thought I would ask real people what they thought since I'd prefer empirical evidence over data surfing. The other point in favor of the Softone is that it's a real product and not an aliexpress special, though plenty of people are happy with their clones, all are one and one are all.

Thanks.

Discovering how a Phonostage influences an 'end sound' has been easy for me to achieve through experience with a selection of Phonstages in use, and compared side by side in the same system with the same Analogue Source.

The learning acquired was enough to let me understand to really discover a Phonostage able to be though of as extremely attractive and not wanted to be separated from has taken many years and a multitude of demos of Phonostages solely in use, or with the permutations able to be created using supporting auxiliaries.

I owned and lived with Phonostages built for me and bought as retail items for multiple years at a time, until discoveries were made that I was to be wedded until l 'death do us part' .

Think of the experiencing Phonostages as a period of going on dates, until the partner is found that is the one to be wedded to. The good news being no rings and no proposals are needed.

Alternatively,  Think of the Journey as being enduring, like a hike up a long hill, where periodically the route levels off and then the next trek is endured until the next levelling off is encountered, with the summit being the ultimate discovery (the ultimate Phonostage for meeting one's own unique preferences for a produced end sound is found).  The lower down level Plateaus being the periods there have been discoveries made for a Phonostage (a Phonostage that has made a good impression, is being put into service and lived with; but one not good enough to cease the Journey to make new discoveries).

My advice is enjoy the Journey, the discoveries to be made, and the reward where there is no doubt the Journey to find the device that meets one's own unique preferences is over.

My own journey ended up with a group of friends being discovered, Phonostages I am in awe of, where the options are a custom designed/built for me Valve Input / Output design, a custom design / built Valve / SS Hybrid and a custon design / built for me SS model. Additional is options to use other supporting auxiliaries to create a Signal Path, such as SUT's and Head Amp's.

I tried to be monogamous in my initial wedded period, but the designs of other options and the impact they made left such a good impression on me. I was compelled to become less faithful to one design and permutation for an Analogue Sources set-up. Today I am fully polygamous with my option for an Analogue Source I am wedded to.

Talking about Phonostages does nothing of great value, but introduces another to a Phonostage, which possibly informs on a Phon' that might end up on a shortlist.

My strong suggestion is that any produced shortlist will serve at its best if used to arrange demos prior to any purchase choice being made.

@macg19

I really appreciate the insight on the Little Loco or perhaps I should say, the Little Loco with mighty performance. I just visited your system page and absolutely loved the transformation. It’s not only beautifully executed but also clearly driven by purpose and thoughtful choices in component isolation. Congrats and enjoy your newfound nirvana 🎶

@pindac Your analogy and approach is good.

I'm in a really good spot at the moment and will enjoy what I have for a while with next priorities being vacation in Italy (Sept.), some proper diffusion and absorption on the front wall (very soon) and maybe a Lumin Dx3 to move to a nice, clean one box solution for digital.

Almost certainly a Dos Loco will come later unless something happens with/to the MSL (I sincerely hope not!!!).

Cheers!

Just had a look, very nice setup. Interesting choice placing the sub in an open area. I’m curious, does it deliver a more meaningful impact there compared to positioning it along the front wall in either corner?
