Bummer! I was waiting for you to say it’s the bestest ever and and that I should run, not walk to order one. 😊
About the Matrix Audio ND-1 DAC
I’ve been looking to upgrade my Denafrips Pontus ll for a while now and I just watched a review of the Matrix Audio ND-1 DAC on the Pursuit Perfect Sound YouTube channel and Terry seemed to like it and it’s AKM chips. I don’t need another preamp. I don’t need another streamer. I don’t need another headphone amplifier. I just want a better ( to my ears ) DAC and this one looks interesting to me.
Does anyone here have any experience with the ND-1?
Thanks in advance.

Well, I could still conceivably tell you that. ;o) Some stores are selling them for $8500, new. Others for $11,000. So anyone interested should probably buy one before only the more expensive units are left. Choice audio had a used Reuss for sale for a long time. Thay may still have it. The owner said he could ship it to me for a trial but the comparisons to the DAC1 MK2 I read described the Russ as having less body and accentuating upper mids and highs, so I didn’t take him up on his offer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That long, long "Six DACs" thread by @mitch2 includes his assessment of the LTA Aero. Here’s his take on its tonality:
To be fair, the Twittering Machines guy tried tube rolling and found a warmer presentation could be coaxed from it: https://twitteringmachines.com/review-linear-tube-audio-aero-dac-part-2-tube-rolling/ I tried it and I found it accentuated sibilance in my system. I do not enjoy fiddling with tubes so I returned it.

@curiousjim the Aero dac that I had in my system had Ray Reserve tubes. Comments made in the 6 dac thread were based on whatever stock tubes shipped with the dac. I have a LTA MicroZOTL preamp and the stock tubes that shipped with it weren't very good. I suppose it's hard for LTA to keep a good inventory of NOS tubes. I have put my system together using components that are neutral and detailed. I used to have issues with sibilance that drove me nuts. I think my preamp was the biggest issue and ironically, it was a well regarded tube preamp that I thought would add warmth (I find that warmth and sibilance are not mutually exclusive). Anyway, I thought the Aero dac sounded excellent. The ability to tube roll adds some flexibility. I think you would like it. I'm not good at describing the sound. It just sounds real. Detailed with good separation of instruments. Big soundstage. The Gustard R-30 dac has three filter settings. Two of the settings would tame the highs a bit. I wonder if the reviewer tried them? |
