Any fans of Over the Rhine?

It’s a rare day when I encounter a band/musician I’ve never heard that inspires me to buy a CD. I spend plenty of time listening to unfamiliar music but it just doesn’t happen very often that I encounter anything that really grabs me.

I stumbled onto OTR on Spotify via the "Fans Also Like" feature. I don’t even recall who I’d been listening to before them.

I find Karin Bergquist’s voice, Lindford Detweiler’s piano playing and the songwriting equally compelling. Not sure what to call this music -- somewhere between Americana and sophisticated Pop, perhaps. I read they are Christian and there are definitely some Christian themes but it’s not preachy in any way. It’s spiritual/universal rather than religious/dogmatic, for those who relate to the distinction.

Just wondering if any (other) forum members are fans. . .

Yep. Big fan. Have been following them for years and collected several albums.. Let it fall might be my all time favourite song but there are many I love. My band even regularly covered Last Night on Earth Again. Have heard them live several times.

I discovered them in 2000. Borders Books (rip) had their album "Good Dog Bad Dog" on a listening station and I was immediately hooked. Their following album ("Films for Radio) in 2001 is my favorite, despite leaning towards electronic dance music (more like "electronic trance music"). I managed to see them on that tour (April of 2001) while visiting a friend in Portland, OR.

I'd say that most fans of bands like the Cowboy Junkies, Innocence Mission or Beth Orton would find OTR's music to be both unique and compelling.

@mitchagain

I’m familiar with Beth Orton and Cowboy Junkies but not Innocence Mission.  Will check them out. Thanks!

I listened to  few songs off Films for Radio, expecting to hate it but I was surprised to find I didn’t.  It’s definitely not my usual sort of listening fare and I probably wouldn’t buy it but still, it was a fun glimpse into what is, for me, an "alternate musical universe".

Yep big fan after Tom on the What’s on your turntable thread mentioned them… I’m in deep ever since. No wonder it is such an incredible thread… but also provides a cautionary counterpoint to the inanity of a poster who spent a lot of time questioning the point of such a thread….

i escaped rustbelt Ahia… that song has meaning
