I think you need a 3 way design, so you can control (cut back) the midrange level, any 2 way lacks a separate midrange, thus lacks that control..

btw, one advantage of cutting the mids is that if you have subs, or add subs, they will retain your pre-set balance.
higher volumes, just return the midrange level control to normal.
