DIY Speakers CSS Torii

Has anyone ever built a pair of Torii's?  I did, and I can tell you, It's the best $400 I ever spent on audio.

These things are amazing. so much so that I had to buy a new amp to drive them.

My current setup is a workbench in my garage. I have a laptop for my streaming, going into a SMSL SU-1 DAC, to my NAD 316 Cbee integrated amp, and the CSS Torii's on speaker stand at either side of my workbench, pulled away from the rear wall about 16 inches.

I am currently listening to Mozart and it sounds AMAZING.  These things are bass monsters.  for the size of the cabinet, and the 4 1/2 inch drivers, they dig deep. Roger Waters, Dark side of the moon, Redux really brings out the sound of these speakers.

I have yet to finish the Cabinets.  I bought a sheet of two tone hickory veneer that I am going to cover them with.

Congratulations on the project. A little bit of elbow grease goes a long way. Post a picture when you finish.

I am a long time DIY'r!

The end results of building a DIY speaker, will always yield a speaker that sound substantially better than the price put into them.

And this is holds true for any price point.

I heard a pair of CSS Criton 1TD-X a few months ago, and was very impressed. Better than any $1500 speaker I know of.

My current DIY speakers are built from a design from well respected speaker designers, Curt Campbell and Jim Holtz, known as the "Bordeax".

They are comprised of: Aurum Cantus Areo Stricuture tweeters, Accuton ceramic mids, and (2 per side) Dayton 8" woofers.

All in, I spent about $3500, but the end results are speakers that rival commercially available speakers at at least, $12K.

The DIY speaker experience can be very satisfying and rewarding. A well executed project is the Best Bang for your buck in audio (and a lot of lessons, transferable to other areas are learned).

Congratulations on your success… very Happy for you.

Simonmoon, Those are some beautiful speakers.  I can't wait to build my next pair.  I was planning to build the Torii Tower P2's, but I should look at some other recommendations first.

Torii Tower P2 (pair)

I can't keep adding more "stuff" in the house.  So I may end up selling the Torii's to offset the cost of the next kit.  There is a high end audio shop in town that may let me sell them on consignment.

Any thoughts about other DIY kits?
