Does Ultralinear kill dynamics

There are manufacturers (no names) that state that Ultralinear circuits will impact dynamics in a negative manner. I’m sure it also depends on design. Maybe I should consider an integrated change.  Comments welcomed. Thanks.

I use an Audio Research Reference 160 amp. It has UltraLinear (140wpc) and Triode mode (75wpc). I and everyone else who has listened to it have chosen the Triode mode. There seems to be no effect on the dynamics or loudness, but the sounds in triode mode is more natural and fleshed out.

I think it is likely if you are close to not having enough power then the relationship between the tradeoffs would change.

Why the secrecy?

No secrecy, just general comments. Ayon discusses the technicals, way out of my credentials.

@ 07062, thank you, 3 hour drive with good conditions. I’ll put it on the schedule next trip nearby. Likewise, welcome also at 11743.

My amps have a switch that allows UL or triode.  I’ve always preferred triode, and typically switch back to triode within a few minutes of trying UL.  I've never noticed a loss of dynamics from UL, but the texture and sound stage sounds more natural and spacious in triode.

FWIW, Convergent Audio Technology amps use triode.
