Wow, Memory Lane.
I’ve always said, my top four (not in order, who can choose) were from High School.
(1) Peter Gabriel, 3 Album Tour. Amazing Stage & Show. Great Musicians. Biko encore was mind melding.
(2) Rory Gallagher, 1978, Headliners in Madison Wisconsin. What an amazing player. Followed a year later at the Parkwest in Chicago. I particularly loved his acoustic playing. I have a photo I took of that show on my mantle here.
(3) Thin Lizzy at the Riviera Theater Chicago (1976?). I think it was their first or second tour of the US. What power they had. The opening act was Be Bop Deluxe and they were amazing too.
(4) Bobby & The Midnights. It was a midnight matinee at the Parkwest in Chicago. Due to a big snow storm, or the Superbown, can’t remember which, they played there the afternoon after an evening show. They announced it during set break. Ran to the box office and immediately got tickets for the Saturday show. Think I was in high school cuz I took the bus. It was cold. Saturday show starting at 3pm. Final encore was about 6:30pm. Guess what it was? Yep, Saturday Night. They served us mimosa’s when we walked in the door. Amazing show. Got good photos of that one. Bobby walked out on a table and played with Bobby Corcoran,
Since then, there have been plenty of incredible shows.
Bela Fleck, My Acoustic Heart @ the Ryman a couple of years ago. 13 musicians playing acoustic instruments on stage. What amazing artistry.
Any of the dozens of Tedeschi Trucks Band shows we have been to. One night maybe 4-5 years ago at the Fox ATL, they opened with Soul Sacrifice. Wowza
Someone earlier mentioned Return To Forever. My 1st show in 1976, but it was “The Complete Concert” tour which knocked my sox off. Horn section with Joe Farrell. Amazing musicality.
Saw Zappa at the Parkwest in Chicago. Night after a big auditorium show. Just him letting the band wail, as he did too. Not a lot of Zappa sarcastic songs, just the music. Was about 20 feet from stage (I loved the Parkwest). He was amazing. I used to see Zappa a couple times a year for a while there. Always top playing.
Biggest Regret. Not seeing Keith Jarrett or Pogues live.
Honorable Mention… Countless Great Blues Club Nights in Chicago. Long live Lefty Dizz.
Didn’t mention any of the amazing 1970’s Grateful Dead Shows, because, well, They Are A Band Beyond Description.
