The best? Talking Heads 1980 Orpheum Theater Boston, the Remain In Light tour with Bernie Worrell, Nona Hendrix, and Adrian Belew. Next? 1976 Little Feat also at the Orpheum, one year after their epic Halloween concert there, ‘76 just as good! Before that, a show at the Fillmore East with B.B. King stealing the show from Paul Butterfield Blues Band and a relative unknown act at the time named The Johnny Winter Texas Blues Experiment. |
I have to say my best concert included Beethoven’s 6th Symphony performed by the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Karl Böhm, in early 1976. I was stationed in then West Berlin. we watched this old man, who led the Vienna Philharmonic during World War II, totter out to the podium, but when he picked up the baton there was a transformation, and he vigorously conducted Beethoven’s Pastorale symphony. When he put down the baton, it was as if he shrank before our eyes. The Berliners went wild, stomping their feet and applauding for 30 minutes before we could get out of the concert hall. I was on duty at “o-dark-thirty” the next morning, so we had to leave, but as we drove through the parking lot past the concert hall 20 minutes later, the applause was still resounding. A VERY memorable experience. Second to that one: Peter, Paul, and Mary at the University of California, Davis, in October, 1962. |
