Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

I don’t recall that we ever mentioned Kelan Phil Cochran. I even searched audiogon to check, no mention of him.  Perhaps some of you heard him play before, as he played on few albums of Sun Ra Arkestra. I must admit, he is new to me as well (the knowledge is fragile) which is strange since he was born I 1927. but I am more surprised that Acman has not posted some of is music before. Anyway, I am sure that kind folks at google will help you discover more.

In the meantime, something to listen. Song from his album called ’African skies’ from 1993.

Hello Alek

I just posted for the first time in many months and saw you posted at approximately the same time. I hope all is well over in the Balkans.

Listening to Hypnotic Brass Ensemble now.

Hello Paul, yes, we must have been posting at the same time. Hope you are doing fine. Everything ok at our part of the world, but as we have discussed before, its getting increasingly difficult to find a place where one could not be affected with things that are going one in the present time, on the world stage. But, than again, nothing new under the sun. East could become a new world frontier

My long-time favorite K. Garrett releases are still Songbook and Beyond the Wall. I will check out that trio release.

I regret that, on more than one occasion, I failed to see him when the opportunity arose.
