My new speakers

After owning Monitor Audio PL500 II speakers for 10 years, I’ve purchased my last speakers, YG Acoustics Sonja 3.3s. They are definitely different than my Monitor Audio PL500 II speakers. In my opinion, Monitor Audio PL500 II speakers offer a great value and do many things well. BUT, the Sonja 3.3s are clearer, tonality is improved, more dynamic and instruments/singers are more palpable. I’m not suggesting a night and day difference, but easily discernible differences. Unfortunately, Incremental improvements are very expensive in this hobby. I would say that I’m done, but I’m sure I’m going to change my Chord Dave DAC.

My thoughts after having new speakers for several days. The YG Sonja 3,3 speakers haven’t been dialed in yet. Final placement and spikes will be completed on Tuesday. That being said, there are clear differences between every speaker I’ve owned and the Sonja 3.3s. I’ve owned several speakers prior to the YG Sonja 3.3s...Aerial 7Ts, several Wilson Audio speakers, several Revel speakers, Artemis EOS, several Klipsch speakers, and Mirage M1s. I’ve listened to Magicos, Von Schweikerts, Vivid Audio, MBLs, and several others. The Sonja 3.3s are very dynamic sounding and one of the few speakers that I’ve listened to that I consider as dynamic as Wilson Audio speakers. In my system/room the 3.3s are neutral and don’t highlight any particular frequency. They produce a 3-dimensional soundstage and imaging that I’ve never experienced before with any other speakers. In comparison the PL500 throw a big soundstage, but not as defined and fleshed out as the 3.3s. Songs that I thought were closed-in, now have a very open sound. My wife continues to say that every instrument/singer has their on space. YG Sonja 3,3 speakers are like technical instruments that allows me to hear every little nuance within a recording, while still being musical.

Impressive speakers.

3 footing design-no kiddies/doggos in that room!

 Pair of No.32's👍

Why not a pair in the rear too?

After demoing many speakers at audio shows and stores, Magico and YG consistently resonated with me as my favorite. Unfortunately a used YG Sonja was unaffordable and a used Magico s5 or better was a budget stretch. Lower model YGs just seemed like a significant drop from Sonja. On my journey, I did give Monitor Audio PL300 several serious store demos before continuing my search.

Congratulations!

kennyc,

Thanks. I agree with you regarding YG speakers below the Sonjas, simply because I prefer taller speakers.

@ricred1 - do you already have ideas for a DAC upgrade yet? If not, I can offer suggestions. My analog rig was finished to a high level, so it was a struggle getting a DAC that was high enough sonically within budget.
