One can have a state of the art digital system which does not sound as good as other sources primarily because mastering digital whether it is onto a CD or into a file to be read on demand is more often poorly done. So much loudness boost and compression.
LPs can bee poorly mastered also. It seems in my opinion that mastering for LPs (especially classical) was done for the most part by very capable, serious professionals. Today, there seems to be less of that type.
I get more liveliness and involvement with LPs. This maybe due to my system (only digital is a Marantz 30n for playing files. My analog system is more elaborate (see my system). Also, I have a bias toward analog. I was around for the introduction of CDs and was completely underwhelmed. How could CDs sound worse than my LPs? But they did. A lot of improvements have been made in the intervening years, but I still harbor this belief, opinion, bias (!!!).
