Why are the roads filled with people, driving back and forth to work

Good question!   

The answer is probably because that’s what corporate america wants us to do.

It’s definitely not because its best for the average Joe, especially with inflated gas prices.   

See how that works?   

Best to pay attention!  Decisions are mainly made by Corporate America and their government lobbiests.  THey are also very good at convincing people that doing their bidding is a good thing, the "American Way".  I wonder about that sometimes, more of late than ever....     

Another good question:   why aren't there more sidewalks and bike lanes?

The airline argument (fly less) sounds noble but it is a false assumption. 

I flew 75 domestic and international scheduled flights for at least 125,000 actual miles in 2025. 

Every single one of those flights would have took off without me, and most would have filled my seat with someone on standby. 

Do I want to fly less? Yep, but to improve my quality of life first and foremost.

@mapman - in San Francisco, sidewalks often serve double-duty as bike and scooter lanes.

here is my not so positive "environmental sins" list:

• I fly around 25K miles a year

(may be offset by not driving, I don't have a car)

• I do eat chicken and sometimes pork
• I run too many appliances (IT)
• I stopped giving money to Greenpeace and the like because there are way too many causes to support. (I just waste money on political campaigns that may advance my causes.)

On the plus side, 450 miles south of you, I avoid using heating and AC at all.
