Changing out Spades

Hello -

I recently purchased Clarus Crimson biwire speaker cables. However, their spades are too wide to fit my Vandersteen Quatro Speakers.

The barrier strips on the Quatro's allow for 7/16" max width, spades on the Clarus are 1/2". I thought I could squeeze them in somehow but can't.

So, I'm considering purchasing Audioquest 507 Series Multi-Spades to change out to. I was assured by Audioquest that those spades do fit in the Quatro barrier strip. My plan was to simply cut off the existing spades on the Clarus cables, peel a bit of casing back, and mount the Audioquest spades.

Is there anything wrong or concerning with doing this?

Thank you for any response!

As update to the group, I made a move!

I brought the conversation and cables to our fab shop. An extremely talented fab guy said, "I can narrow those spade legs without breaking them and get to an outer spade dimension of 7/16". I thought, go for it, he’s confident he can do it and I know he’s good at what he does. I’ll just have him do one and then show me. And BTW, Clarus did say they would repair/restore a mishap if I have one.

Well, IT WORKED BEAUTIFULLY! The spades are now 7/16" with legs about 1/8". I expect they will fit onto the Vandersteen Barrier strip when I bring them home, and the screw down will have as much contact with this modified spade as it would have had it not been altered.

So, happy ending here. Most importantly though, I want to thank everyone who participated and provided me great options.

I’m very tankful and grateful!

👍 , Gotta love a Happy Ending ! I commend you for posting the result, I very much enjoy hearing the solution to the problem.

The transparent adaptors may work if he doesnt want to modify, but i am skeptical of any company that says introducing extra adaptors is better than bare wire, which is the most direct sonic path.
