Puritan PSM156

Hello All,

I came across this product while searching Power Conditioners. Puritan PSM156.

Does anyone have one, or, does anyone know anything about it, and how it would stand up to or even better the more popular and well known brands?

@laynes - Great to hear you are enjoying the Puritan 156. It sounds like you are having the same experience as reported by many, including myself, here on the forum.

The Puritan 156 is an amazing product. It just makes listening to music much more enjoyable.

I do have my power amps (AGD Audion mkiii, Gryphon 120) connected directly into the Puritan. For me, I'm willing to forgo the direct-to-wall connection for the power amps as I'm paranoid about needing surge protection. Both systems sound fantastic. Some level of surge protection is another great benefit of the Puritan.

@audphile1

You don’t know what you are talking about! The Puritan 156 does NOT have transformers and does not emit EMF or  RFI. I have my monoblock Class D amps, preamp, a  CD player, phono stage and streamer plugged into the model PSM1512  and there is no current limiting or noise issues. In fact, my system is very quiet!

Furthermore, all my components are within inches to a foot or two of the Puritan.

Also, why would they put transformers in a device that is designed to remove transformer hum caused by DC?

@audphile1 I visited the Puritan table yesterday at AXPONA and asked them about plugging in a higher power/current amp versus the wall. They claim their 156 will not limit the amplifier any whatsoever! I'm doing this now with my Accuphase A-80 with zero problems. I've also used my Coda #8 amp plugged into my 156 with no problems. I've had my 156 for a few years now and was actually interested in maybe buying a 1512 since I ran out of outlets. They actually recommended I just buy another PSM-156 and use both instead. They told me to use one for digital and the other for everything else. This suggesting will definitely save me money and that's what I plan on doing!

@willywonka I don’t doubt your experience and I definitely don’t doubt them stating the 156 isn’t current limiting and that you should buy one more.

My experience with it, and I bought the PSM156 new from the dealer, that it mellowed the dynamics. Components I had plugged into it were Pass XA30.8 amp, Pass XP-22 preamp, Bricasti M3 DAC.
Removing these components one by one from the puritan and plugging them directly into wall outlet restored the dynamics, with each step.

When I upgraded from XA30.8 to X260.8 monos and decided to try these amps in a puritan 156, the unit started ringing and buzzing like crazy. I actually thought it was going to fall apart. It could not handle the 260w/ch mono amps, even at turn on.

I didn’t like it’s impact in my system even though initially it appeared it reduced noise…it just rounded things off and reduced dynamics. I sold it and never looked back.

If it works for you with your gear, great! Power conditioners are something that you need to really try to see if you like the effect.

In addition, the outlets on the 156 over time lose grip and the power cords end up sagging off. You need to prop them with some sort of support.
My favorite was the true non current limiting Shunyata Hydra 4.

Here’s a picture of 156. I just can’t see how it possibly would not limit current.
