"Part of my motivation to make this a separate topic is to bring it to the forefront. It has been ignored too long and there are so many sound systems posted on Audiogon with wonderfully sounding and well-curated equipment that languish in a morass of bad reflections. Having room acoustics as a separate topic codifies its place in hi-fi and you ignore it not at your peril, but rather as a waste of money because you are not hearing what you paid for as well as you could."
Should Room Acoustics be an Audiogon ‘topic’?
The available topics on Audiogon do not include Room Acoustics. This area is as important as any other, and has a far greater impact on what we hear than amps, preamps, and cables put together, IMO. Does anyone know how to lobby to include it? Do I need to start a petition? ; )

Where’s @mahgister ? This is right down his alley. Hope all is well. |
@tcutter No argument here that it's the most important component of your system. But having said that what else do we say? We can all change components based on others' recommendations and discussion but we generally can't change the dimensions of our rooms and probably not the materials that compose it so maybe the topic should just be "Room Treatment" ? @mapman I'm surprised he hasn't chimed in as well but when he does on acoustics it's usually at a doctoral thesis level that most of us don't understand. |

"I consider my hobby was once, in the period i learned it about : acoustics and his relation to the three others workings dimensions +Psychoacoustics factors... For most people instead of being the ground of audiophilia it is an optional decorative ceiling... The main business of audio threads is marketing, well inspired or not ...
This will not change... People dont read books and anyway nobody experiment under his wife eyes in a living room ...
I am done with purchasing (except for replacing a broken piece) I learned acoustics. Now my hobby is music and A.I. studies...

Looking at fellow 'Goners systems, it is clear that many have little clue where to best place their listening position, speakers, and furnishings, likely because they have no idea it even matters. Coffee tables in front, speakers right next to the wall, no rugs, listening with draperies open and not drawn, and listening right up against the back wall are all things that may be able to be changed without disrupting the primary cohabitant, at least for listening sessions. For those who wish to do more, it provides a dedicated resource. Novices are drawn to this forum and as they review the "important" topics, it is clear that acoustics is not one of them, taking a back seat to things that are not nearly as impactful. If acoustics is not going to be a topic, what is the rationale for any of the others? I would rather see the next generation perseverating over room reflections than cables.
