Speakers for Small Room

Hi all.  I’ll be moving later this year and significantly downsizing.  My current listening room is 23’ x 32’ x 12’.  The space at my new place is 15’ x 10’ x 9’.  Speakers will go along the long wall due to doorways, windows, etc.  My speakers include Volti Audio Rivals (currently hooked-up), Devore O/96 and Magnepan LRS+.  Amplification is Pass Labs XA30.8.  Looking for thoughts on which of the above would be the best fit, or open to suggestions for other speakers.  I initially thought the Devores, but they’re rear-ported and need some pretty decent space from the front wall, which I won’t have.  Although the Volti’s are large, they can be positioned pretty close to the front wall.  Just not sure how "in my face" they’ll sound as my seating position will be about 8’ away.  Almost forgot to mention, also have a pair of REL Carbon Specials that I doubt I'll need in the new, smaller space.  Of course, amplification might need to change depending on speaker recommendations, so feel free to throw out suggestions on that front too.  I’m agnostic as to solid state or tube, but not interested in integrateds as my Grimm MU2 serves as my preamp.  Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I agree, Joseph Audio speakers sound exceptional, and the build and finish is superlative.

One reason is that he uses the ’Infinite Slope’ crossover, originally patented by Richard Modafferi for the JSE Infinite Slope speakers. From his site:

https://www.josephaudio.net/prism-technical-specifications

"Crossovers:  Asymmetrical Infinite Slope Crossover at 2.5 kHz.

Constructed of specially selected components, Each individual network is precisely adjusted, resulting in a virtually perfect match to the original prototype.

The steep filter slopes ensure good acoustical behavior in the crossover regions, with a minimum of acoustical interference, along with low distortion and wide dynamic range. Driver acoustic responses are in-phase throughout the crossover regions."

I owned and loved the JSE Model 2’s for years, these are sold but the listing shows them well

AI Quickie about Richard Modafferi

(I suspect AI is not giving Jeff Joseph his due in the design of his speakers).

"Richard Modafferi is a renowned audio engineer and inventor best known for designing the McIntosh MR77 and MR78 tuners while working as a Senior Engineer at McIntosh Laboratories from 1968 to 1974.  He is also credited with developing the famous "Rimo" filter, the Infinite Slope Crossover technology, and Phase Shift Bass Loading, for which he holds United States patents.

After leaving McIntosh, Modafferi founded Modafferi Acoustical Systems, Inc. and later served as an independent consultant to Audio Classics, where he personally performs repairs, modifications, and updates on vintage McIntosh tuners to exceed their original performance limits.  He also designed the Joseph Audio speakers and invented the Infinite Slope crossover, which minimizes wave interference in multi-driver loudspeakers to improve off-axis response."

+1 for the Dynaudio Confidence 20s. I have mine in a 9x9x9 listening space and they sound superb. Listening distance is near field, less than 6 feet. They are used with a pair of REL T5/X subs with downward firing ports.

@jjjgasp, I have Volti Rivals in my big room. Love them but never tried them in my small room. I did go thru 4 sets of speakers trying to find the best fit for a smaller space. I ended up with a beautiful pair of Omega Super Alnico Monitors custom made by Louis Chochos in Connecticut. They are super sweet in the midrange and go deeper than I expected. I do run a REL sub at times mostly for poorer recordings and vinyl. It’s worth chatting up with Louis.  Good luck!

OP.   You’ve got great taste in equipment!  I really like my Falcon gold badge LS3/5’s in a similar size room (sealed box). Best 3/5 I auditioned!  But I don’t think they reach the level of your other speakers. A little mid bass bump. Good luck and let us know what you end up with.
