I need help

I'm new to DSP processing and can't figure out how to rout the cables.

I have a Dayton Audio DSP408, a CD player, left and right passive mid drivers with banana inputs, left and right passive tweeters with banana plugs, a powered sub and 2 integrated amps.

I pretty well understand how to use the software in the DSP but don't know how to hook things up. Can someone help this beginner?

runamuck

Here is an AI answer. I wonder what others will say. Good luck!

Basic Signal Flow

The DSP408 is an active crossover. Think of it this way:

  1. Source → DSP: Your CD player connects to the DSP's analog inputs (L/R RCA)
  2. DSP → Amplifiers: The DSP processes and splits the signal by frequency, sending different outputs to different amps
  3. Amps → Drivers: Your amplifiers power the drivers

Physical Wiring

  • CD player → DSP408 analog in (RCA cables)
  • DSP408 out (typically 4 pairs of RCA, or configurable outputs) → your two integrated amps
    • Integrated amp #1 gets the midrange output from DSP
    • Integrated amp #2 gets the tweeter output from DSP
  • Integrated amp #1 outputs → left/right mid drivers (banana plugs)
  • Integrated amp #2 outputs → left/right tweeters (banana plugs)
  • Powered sub → can connect directly to DSP (if it has a subwoofer output) or to one of your amp outputs, depending on your setup

Key Question for Them

Before they wire, they need to understand: how many independent outputs does their DSP408 have? The software will show this. That determines how to pair frequency bands with amplifiers.

Software Note

The DSP software will let them assign which frequency ranges go to which output channels. So they'd typically:

  • Assign mids to Output 1
  • Assign tweeters to Output 2
  • Assign sub to Output 3 or a dedicated sub channel

Then wire the physical outputs accordingly.
