How, I wonder were we able to enjoy music playing through reference gear in the 90s without $10,000 cables?
Could it be that in the 90s we worked for a living, spent our money raising kids and building homes, and had intact cognitive abilities?
How Much Have You Spent On Cables Throughout The Years. I'm Shocked When I Checked.
I just checked the total cost of cables which I still own, all types of cables including spares. It's all recorded in an Excel sheet, actual price paid and not MSRP.
I'm shocked. It's a whopping sum of $22.4k. ![]()
I'm sure there would be people who have spent more. I have seriously overspent on cables though I still need to get another mains power cable before I call it a day, a rather costly one.
You make a good point, but the kind of claims some so-called "audiophiles" make are in 1,000 mph fastball territory. Some even claim they can throw supersonic fastballs. If folks were able to discuss cables and tweaks reasonably and intelligently, we wouldn't be having these conversations.

@thecarpathian , I think it involves more than one person, a lot of us including myself have a part in it. I try to take the high road but sometimes I slip into my 4 year old self and have a temper tantrum. @devinplombier , do you think we just didn’t know better back in the day ? I remember going into a local brick and mortar store and in the high end listening room they had selector switches to match an amp to the speaker you wanted to audition. They had 6 or 8 guage clear copper bulk cable in double pairs going to each set of speakers. Now we have artsy fartsy cables with Greek god names. 😆 I personally believe that cables do make a difference and think that there is a point of diminishing returns. But I’m just a glad to be here as an under experienced mid Fi guy. |
@buellrider9 +1. Yup. Why can’t some folks be nice? |
A lot and it was worth every penny considering the impact you get from good cables. Problem seems to be that some people cannot afford it and seem to take an aggressive position that others shouldn’t buy it either because they decided it’s all a scam. For me funny that this always escalates with cables, but 200k amplifiers and DACs are ok… |
