Finally a really good sounding LP pressing of Pet Sounds?
Pet Sounds has long been held in high regard musically, but not sonically (my 1966 mono LP sounds like a 3rd-generation copy made at 3-3/4ips) The video below is a 4-way discussion of the upcoming 1-Step LP that is claimed to change that situation.

@aleceiffel: The Vinylphyle pressing of Pet Sounds is using the 1966 tape as it's source, the 1-Step the 1972 tape. That's important, as is the 1-Step mastering (with the added factor of the mixing console being bypassed) and the vinyl compound being Neotech VR-900-D2.

@bdp24 Right, I was just using that as more of a case of comparison for the stereo mix, wondering if the Vinylphyle is worth it for the stereo over the AP 45 or some other release. |
@aleceiffel: Whether or nor to get the new Vinylphyle stereo/mono 2-LP set is also of interest to those already owning one of the other previous stereo LP’s, such as the one Capitol issued in 1999. I have a copy, but it’s still sealed. As for the stereo Analogue Productions pressing, I don’t think the recorded sound quality of Pet Sounds warrants the 45 RPM version, the 33-1/3 is sufficient. I believe both the stereo and mono AP’s are out of print, but still available from Acoustic Sounds at somewhat higher than original prices. How the AP and upcoming Vinylphyle versions compare remains of course to be seen (or rather heard

@slaw: Well Steve, the stereo mix was done by Brian, and one of his ears is pretty much non-functioning. I bought a copy only because I’m a completist, and the hype sticker on the shrink wrap reads "Limited edition". As Chad Kassem says, "Buy now or cry later."
