Upgrade Power Cord for FM Tuner

For those still using FM tuners (I stream also), what would you consider the best value in upgraded power cords? While retubing my vintage MD-108 today (original Sovtek to Northern Electric) I was embarrassed to discover that I had never bothered to upgrade the original crappy cord. Nothing over $500, as this unit is quite long in the tooth and may never be replaced when it dies.

Hello Skeptics!  In "the old days," nobody thought about power cables and power supplies were not made to filter out RF information the power cords might pick up. Filtering out the 60 or 120 Hz line frequency was all we worried about. I live in a town with a nearby Navy base. One day I connected an oscilloscope to some unused telephone wire leftover from a previous rental. Neither end was connected to anything. The wire was around 20 feet long. I saw about two volts of pure junk on that wire!  TWO VOLTS!  All the wires in my house were catchng that RF nonsense too! Put a small mica capacitor (600 volt rating) from both sides of the power line to ground and across the filter capacitors in the power supply of your tuner and that should improve things markedly. It worked for me. Many of the newer, upscale power cords filter out junk RF with wire geometry or sheilding. Happy listening.

Sorry to be late to the party. About two decades ago, I replaced the captive zip-cord power cord on my Sony ST-S550 ES tuner with an Audio Sensibility Testament power cord, hard-wired to the unit. The effect was transformative.  The cable now sells for $374 CDN (~$276 USD), less 15% for Montreal Audiofest sale, or about $235 USD.

I only listen to my local NPR station for about 2 hours/week, using a Magnum Dynalab ST-2 FM antenna, $700 interconnects, and some special footers that were under $200. The sound quality is very close to my much more expensive analog and digital front ends. Given that I bought the tuner used for $150 in 1991, I'm well under $1/week for all that musical enjoyment. I wish I could say the same for my DAC and my turntable.

Look for the Audience F3 power cord. They sell for @$160. I have three of them.  They also have the F5 more $, but I never tried them.

All the best.

I don't believe the expensive cords, are so much better..I use 16 ,18 gage wire....I cant hear any difference....
