It appears Andrew Jones has started his own company, "Jones & Cerreta" and will be showcasing a new speaker with a field coil concentric driver at Axpona.

I am excited to audit this speaker and talk to him at Axpona in a couple of weeks.

why AJ would choose to use 1920’s tech in a 2020’s speaker

Adding to @phusis ’s excellent post, the age of a technology has zero bearing on its relevance, per se. Tesla leveraged 1860s tech to good effect.

it should be pretty easy to understand that electromagnets are adjustable / tunable in ways fixed magnets simply aren’t. Tunability is considered a desirable attribute.

@curiousjim

In the old days, permanent magnets first didn’t exist, then they were very expensive (Alnico). Electromagnets were economical in comparison, so everyone used them.

In the 50s cheap ferrite magnets displaced electromagnets. Field coil drivers pretty much vanished from the face of the earth, until their recent reincarnation as luxury / boutique item.
