I seem to remember people recommending the AP pressing?
Finally a really good sounding LP pressing of Pet Sounds?
Pet Sounds has long been held in high regard musically, but not sonically (my 1966 mono LP sounds like a 3rd-generation copy made at 3-3/4ips) The video below is a 4-way discussion of the upcoming 1-Step LP that is claimed to change that situation.

Fremer himself gave the Analogue Productions mono a glowing review at the time of its release. In the panel discussion he now pans that pressing in rather extreme fashion, an exaggeration I suspect. A good many people have long preferred the version that came with the Carl And The Passions album, which was later released as a separate LP. As I said above, that version was made using the 1972 tape, as is the 1-Step. Pet Sounds is also being released this year in a 2-LP version, one LP mono (analogue source) the other stereo (digital). Neither is cut from the 1972 tape.

@bdp24 The video was interesting, thanks. I wish more arcane and difficult to find records were remastered/remixed and re-released. For example the Smithsonian Folkways catalogue,The Haydn Society or the Melodya catalogue. And offered as DSD downloads as well. But I guess like everything else, these projects cost time and money and records need to sell. Anyway, it's good to see a major record label investing in this type of endeavor. |
Cleaned my only two copies this morning DCC/mono and a 1999 Capitol stereo remaster.. The DCC sounds a little dark overall. There are song to song inconsistencies and the vocals could be veiled on side one at times. Side two sounds noticably better. My stereo version is more open with a wide ss which is how I prefer to hear it. My opinion, I’m no Beach Boys expert. |
