Need Tube Suggestions for Rogue Dragon Monos

I have been using the Rogue Dragon mono blocks for about a week now driving my Magnapan LRS+ and they are doing a great job. They have those panels by the short hairs and won't let go. Are they perfect? No, not quite. I would like more air and better layering in the staging. Tube rolling time.

Any suggestions for 12AU7 tubes to accomplish that? I have been rolling tubes in my preamp (Backert Labs Rhythm). I had a pair of Ray Select that were gutsy and textured but lacked the air/staging I want. Now listing to PSVane Horizons and they are closer to what I need.

I also have a pair of new production Mullards, a pair of Mazda NOS, and a pair of 5418A RCA Mil grade NOS. The tubes in the Dragons (also 12AU7) are the OEMs (not sure what) that come in it. Suggestions?

I'm also looking for a pair of NOS 6922 (Amperex?) for my tube buffer (between my Denifrips T+ 15th and my preamp).

TIA!

@markmuse

I have tried several different 12au7 tubes and I settled on NOS RCA Cleartops. They sound clean, they are plentiful , not crazy expensive and they are quiet!

All the best.

+1 @ghdprentice , Give them PLENTY of time. I have other Rogue gear and my guess is they have JJ’s. Unless someone has that exact amp their recommendations are not accurate. FWIW I have multiple pieces of Rogue gear and prefer NOS Telefunkens , but it’s not always the best. Rogue will recommend Andy at Vintage Tube Service for their customers looking for NOS tubes. I’d absolutely contact for a consult before you buy anything. For 6922’s I like Seimens CCa and Tekefunken E88CC, but that’s me in my gear. Please post your findings as I’m looking to by a pair of class D’s down the road and Rogue is on my short list. Happy Hunting , Mike B.

@buellrider97 Thanks Mike, good advice. Not JJs, but some other common Russian made - I just don’t remember.

Thanks for the NOS source recommendation. Now that Brent Jessie closed shop I need a good honest source. His website was primitive at best, but contained a wealth of info. And he was unfailingly honest and helpful.

For class D I can recommend AGD. I’ve had several of his lower powered amps, but not powerful enough to drive the Maggies. He does have some in the same power class as the Dragons, but are 2x expensive. They are excellent amps. Oh, and don't overlook Atmasphere's class D monos. Maybe not quite enough grunt for the Maggies, but more than enough for most others. And Ralph is a good guy.

My only concern with the Dragons is I believe they use an older output module, which might mean a more severe HF rolloff to avoid filter interaction. And that might be why I’m not getting the air I want. Just guessing about that.

Yes , I think Andy would be very informative. I have a Rogue Hera and Rogue M-180 Darks. I put a quad of nos nickle plate Seimens in the M-180’s. I have Sovtek’s in the Hera and can’t afford $2500 for an octet of nos Russian tubes for it. The nickle Siemens definitely give it more sparkle than nos Tekefunkens. I definitely like Ralph’s amps and I have Tekton DI’s ( let the criticism start 😆 ) so they definitely have enough power. Cheers , Mike B.
