Tehnics sb1000 capacitor change, yes or no?
Hi everybody, nice to meet everyone.
So i have a pair of these vintage speakers, and i was told they would benefit from a cap change. i was told that SB-1000 uses electrolytics and that they don't age well. That i should swap them for film capacitors, like mundorf and such. Is this true? Will it change the character of the speakers or just restore the sound to what's intended?

Looks easy enough to replace and save the caps. If the caps were in an amplifier I would have changed them 20 years (not certain about crossover use). Caps in crossovers don’t go bad as quickly as those in amps. Even when exact values are used for replacements, the sound can change quite dramatically. If you go with replacement, keep the ones you pulled out in case you decide to reverse what you did. Some popular replacement choices sound lean and “dry” to me. I know someone who can instantly hear Mundorfs in electronics and speakers; he hates them. The film caps I tend to like are a bit expensive, like Audio Note caps. The vintage caps I particularly like are paper in oil caps and motor run caps. |
