Physical Media. Currently streaming music is best served as background music and a lifestyle choice. The defenders will always claim equal or superior SQ which can be achieved on very few digital files with extremely costly gear The vast majority of files still have substandard SQ. Hopefully within 5 years enough sonic/implementation improvements will be made(all files/services/components) where streaming can be another music platform for the discerning Audiophile.
Replacing Roon - What Should I get?
I'm tired of Roon having brain farts. I have an original Roon Nucleus and have updated and augmented the Memory. This helped for a bit. But now, I keep having to reboot the darn thing.
It's not my network. I have checked it out and everything in the house works fine.
Here is the setup. A direct fiber optic link goes to the Router. Then ethernet to Roon from the Router. This way I get Roon to talk with the setup upstairs. I have an 35 foot ethernet cable that runs through the walls directly from the router into my dCS Lina.
I want to replace the Roon. I am thinking about an Innuos Stream. Just need a streamer that can hold Roon/Tidal. Don't need a DAC as the dCS does that quite well. I have a SSD in the Nucleus that holds a ton of my music that I want to move over.
Thoughts on what to replace the Roon with? Innuos (Stream) always get bandied about. I hear about Arender as well. I don't want to get an updated Roon.
I also wonder about deleting and reinstalling the Roon App on my iPads.
Thanks in Advance

on your mac go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network make sure you toggled Roon on. if audiogon tagging would work properly I would tag you @campoly |
@audphile1 , unfortunately that has no effect this time. I remember that trick from last year when Mac os update broke Roon. There seems to be a deeper issue in this case. |
That’s how they force you to buy their nucleus. I finally gave up on mac mini as core and bought nucleus one. And it too requires a periodic reboot to sound its best because roon is too much of a good thing even for their own hardware. So yeah @dayglow I love your answer. Even though streaming sounds great in my system, the software and hardware inflicted wounds hinder its potential big time. |
I finally had time to upgrade the PC I run Roon on to latest Asus Nook 15 Pro mini-pc, cost <1K. This is most recent model with a lot more horsepower than my prior similar model that was almost 10 years old already, so was ready for an upgrade, especially in that Roon had been fussing about running on it quite a bit of late. So far so good. Great performance overall, very quiet running, and Roon appears to be zipping along quite optimally now. I’ll post if anything changes but Asus Nook 15 pro mini looks like a winner for running Roon. All problems gone, at least so far. Moving my programs from old Windows 10 to new Windows 11 was a breeze, including Roon. All my Roon files are on a remote USB drive which I just connected to new PC, then shut down old PC, installed Roon on new, logged in, and restored my library from backup. Nice! |
