DDC Sound Improvements???

I went from the N130 + Teddy Pardo to an Innuos ZENith Mk3.  There was certainly no obvious global improvement.

The Nano with LPS sounds clean, open, and transparent. Based on all the testimonials provided here, I believe others are hearing something similar. However, the instrument separation is less apparent, and the depth of the soundstage is also reduced compared with my Rivo+. The width of the soundstage is narrower as well. This is consistent with Tarun’s observations.

Therefore, to say that switching to the Innuos Zenith Mk3 (with triple LPS inside the unit) does not provide ’global’ improvement is likely an oversight of its soundstage performance.  Tarun also commented that the ICON has much better separation and soundstage depth, and Hans rated it as a low 1B (Zenith 3 as 1B). It might be worth trying.

yes i also compared the modded node with lps to a rivo plus/lineo at length... i would concur that in a highly resolving system one can hear the rivo plus images larger/wider, though overall tonality is very similar (very balanced presentation, unlike others such as the uptilted eversolos, and downtilted lumins)... not that the node is poor in its soundstage, but the volumio is better ... we must remember we are now comparing a ~$500 front end to one that is 3-4x more costly

this plus the fact the the volumio interface can be buggy and somewhat cumbersome, compared to the smooth as silk user experience of good ol blu-os... so one chooses their basket of preferred attributes

in the realm of ultra affordable excellent sounding digital front ends, we cannot overlook the ifi Zen stream (with lps, using wired connection) or an auralic aries or aries mini ... yes the company is gone but the lightning os app is open source, stable, and the sonic quality is just superb

as a general observation, we are in a very fortunate time where there are more excellent sounding, smooth functioning, highly cost effective streamers than ever... a real boon to the community is this respect

Agreed, and I believe more cost-effective streamers are on the way.

The Node ICON is on its way. I will audition it with its built-in power supply first, then order the panel adapter ($75) to connect it to my Lhy LPS25VA for comparison. I’m hopeful—it may end up staying in my second rig if it renders the soundstage to my satisfaction.

Volumio has become much more stable. I haven’t encountered any service interruptions for quite some time, although the software hasn’t been updated and is still not on par with other apps. I’ve learned to work around it, as its sound quality outweighs the inconvenience. Others who don’t care about the sound quality difference Qobuz Connect and its native app can simply use the former without any complaints.

FWIW, let me share my experience with these two devices—you’ll immediately understand what I mean. Playing ‘Simple Song’ by Passenger on the Rivo+, I felt like Michael was singing right in the room with me, with the whole band surrounding him. It was incredibly real. On the Nano, it felt more like a very natural / smooth recording playing on my first rig. Try this track tonight with your eyes closed and see if you experience the same sensation.

Exaggeration? you bet! But that’s exactly how it felt.
