Kid in a Candy Shop

I’m sure many of you remember the mailers from MHS (Musical Heritage Society) from nearly half a century ago---seriously!  Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems like the average LP sold for $5.99 or so.  Anyway, I found mot of these recordings to be of fairly high quality.  You would mail in your order and then wait for that brown cardboard package to arrive in a couple of weeks or so.

Fast forward.  My daughter tells me she wants a turntable for Christmas--nothing fancy but she and her friends are getting into vinyl.  "I like the ticks and pops Dad."  So recently she was home and we visited a local used record shop that catered to her demographic.  Right before we left I found a box of Classical music on the floor with many MHS recordings--they appeared quite pristine and were priced at $1.00 each!!!!!  I grabbed around 10.  The other night I couldn’t sleep so I gave up the fight, put on the coffee, and listened to these recordings--all of them.  Wow!  Very nice indeed.

I went back to that shop last night and grabbed 40 LP’s for $39!  As I type, I am listening to Tomasco Albinoni--a wonderful like- new recording.  What a treasure trove.

So many good memories and recordings coming back to life.

Bin diving is the best. I do it wherever I go and always bring something home. There’s a good used record store in Greenfield MA which I visit every time I go see my sister who lives up there. One time I bought a bunch of 1950s and 1960s comedy records—including Lenny Bruce at Carnegie Hall, Mort Sahl, others of that era. That was really a blast from the past. Not my past, but THE past.

Yes, I could see this becoming and enjoyable way to spend an hour or two on a regular basis.

I was in Florida recently for some relaxation and a break from the cold north. Went shelling on Sanibel.  Finding that perfect shell feels a lot like finding an LP treasure.  Lots of fun for next to free sometimes.

@corelli ,

Recently did some shelling also on St. George Island off the panhandle. One end of the island is a state park and nature preserve, beach is littered with beautiful shells. Wife and I first stopped off for a couple of nights at Silver Springs State Park Lodge. It was where they filmed ’Creature From The Black Lagoon’. Spring was full of manatees.

Picked up a bunch of fresh, local Tupelo honey and headed to the island. St. Augustine this weekend. I know I insult the heck out of Florida, but there are some really cool places in the northern part. After that, play time is over and back to beautiful New England.
