What improvements would I get with a "better" preamp?

Current preamp is Mapletree Audio 2A/SE Linestage, upgraded with Black Gate caps. Tube rectified separate power supply. 6SN7 per channel. Point-to-point wired. What could be better (for less than $5,000) and why? Must have RCA ins/outs, not XLR.

In the above table (https://forum.audiogon.com/posts/2887705) I see in the lowest row mentioned an Ayre preamp. Where would a Bryston BP 25/26 be positioned in this table? And what strengths?

@vhond  I owned the BP-6 for years and according to James Tanner is very similar in design and sonically to the BP-26 outside the separate power supply and balanced inputs.  I can tell you it’s extremely quiet and neutral — literally straight wire with gain — and throws off a large, deep 3D soundstage.  It adds virtually nothing on its own and just passes on everything it’s fed completely unfettered, so in that regard in terms of the list it’s probably most like the Benchmark.  Hope this helps.

@soix  (or others) : but when you compare it to the Ayre would it be similar or better?

@vhond  To me, Ayre adds just a little smoothness to the sound where Bryston sounds more strictly neutral and transparent.  Both are great and just depends on your preferences and system synergy.  Just my take.

@rockadanny What tubes are you using? Have you done any tube rolling? Different tubes can make quite a difference in what you hear. Bad tubes can make a really nice piece sound pretty bad. Just a thought.
