Several thoughts on the Pegasus. I have the original in my headphone system and like it a lot, but apparently the sound character changed quite a bit in the second version (not necessarily overall for the better) and may do so again in the third version so I’d wait for some reputable reviews before buying. Next, and very significantly, it’s said the Pegasus sounds best via XLR outputs (the way I use it) and that possibly only half the R2R ladder may be active with RCA outs (I’ve not confirmed that BTW) that are the only option on your preamp, so that alone could be a deal breaker depending on the new design in addition to its sonic character. If it was me I’d check to see if the Gustard R26 has the same limitation through its RCA outs and if not then just buy a used one — I suspect it may sound better than the Pegasus anyway. Another option might be the LAiV µDAC but I’m not too familiar with that one from a sonic standpoint although read some good things. Hope this helps.
Musician Pegasus II now III
I’m contemplating picking up the Upcoming Musician Pegasus DAC. The “III” is due out mid to late Jan, ‘26.
I currently picked up a Fiio BR15 R2R DAC to test the waters on R2R and find it to really not have much sparkle, I mean I guess I can EQ the heck out of it, which I’ve tried and it’s just Ok. Highs seem to break up at times and I’m not too happy with vocals, but gotta say some instruments like sax, etc., sound pretty good.
I see there’s only OS “On” of OS “Off” on the Pegasus, so I’d like to hear from Pegasus owners their thoughts of how the Pegasus handles Highs, Mids & Bass.
Note: I’ll be feeding the DAC via COAXIAL utilizing either a Rivo Plus Streamer or a SILENT ANGEL M1T streamer. I’m still A/B’ing the streamers and have not finalized which one I’ll be keeping.
Thanks
