@gelle, maybe because I see the current Victrola as essentially a Crosley wannabe that is trying to go slightly upscale, and not a serious contender in the TT market? Or maybe that's just me.
Looking for a well matched Preamp. Pls advise!
Currently using my Marantz as my preamp. No longer needing for surround etc.
my current equipment is :
Adcom GFA555ms
KEF LS50 50th anniversary.
MHTD Orchid tube dac(used for streaming Roon).
Oppo BDP105. (Occasionally for CD transport)
SVS PB12-NSD Sub
Victrola Carbon with Ortofon blue
So I’m looking to replace the Marantz with a proper Preamp. Need to drive the sub as well as a Phono amp(in case I move on from the Victrola)
Looking for suggestions! TIA

this might be a good choice, read the details about it's included optional phono board's settings https://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/650283120-vtl-25-all-tube-preamp-with-mm-and-mc-board/ |
I agree with @fatdaddy2 Although I haven’t heard that TT, I wouldn’t spend anything like $2000 on a preamp - unless you intend to replace the Victrola with a higher end TT soon. Then you need to consider whether you’d be going AN MC or MM cartridge. But that’s another discussion. Not sure if the Victrola has a built in phono stage. If so, you currently don’t need a pre with one included. In that case, $800 for something like the Schiit Kara would be as much as I would invest. |
What Marantz are you using? I disagree completely that it’s not worthwhile to upgrade your preamp. A preamp is critical, and a good dedicated stereo preamp will greatly improve overall system performance whether you’re using your turntable or DAC especially if you’re currently using a mass market AVR. |
