PayPal has stacked the deck against the buyer. If u sell something on PayPal, even if it's a recurring charge, you the buyer can no longer go to PayPal and reverse the payment or stop the recurring charge. So big ticket item sellers demanding wire transfer as payment for sure are doing at least one thing - avoiding PayPal and credit card fees.
No wonder nothing sells: wire transfer only
Seems big ticket items not only carry big prices but also big risks.
Many sellers, selling ultra priced equipment are only willing to accept wire transfer as payment. Where’s the protection for the buyer? Speaking on experience, I would never send anything over $1000. to anyone no matter how good their feedback is without some sort of protection as a buyer. Maybe it’s just me, but nightmares do exist and can come true!

“I would never send anything over $1000” Would you mind clarifying, how is wire transfer is different from “PayPal Friends&family only or check clearance first” option outlined in your ads on USAM. The way I see it all of the above are non-reversible, cleared forms of payment options and puts buyers at risk. Frankly your comment, I would never send anything over $1K, doesn’t inspire whole lot of confidence in conducting a transaction with you either (no offense). To @tomic601 point, any transaction small or big can be transact risk free by doing your due diligence regardless of payment terms. |
@ghdprentice +1 I also like the safety of buying from dealers, although I’ve had a couple of used transactions. I would never wire a substantial amount of money to someone I didn’t know to buy a piece of used gear, but it’s a matter of your personal tolerance for risk. It works until it doesn’t. In my days as a prosecutor I dealt with enough scams, some of them very elaborate which successfully fooled some extremely sophisticated people, that I’m a bit jaded. If it was something that I really, really wanted and we were getting on up into the five figures I would probably invest in a plane ticket to go check it out personally. Again, just gets down to your individual tolerance for risk.

Trust should work both ways. A seller doesn’t trust me to pay with a credit card, but in return they expect me to trust that the item is as advertised, would arrive safely- or arrive at all - that is a funny seller with some funny expectations.. I personally would rather pay a little more and buy from a local dealer and support local business. Or get a little less and sell to a local dealer and support local business. |
