Music Servers

Hello. I'm sure this topic has been discussed before and if it has,  my apologies for the redundancy.  But I'm wondering if anyone has experience with purchasing music on line and using a dedicated music server for ripping CDs and storing tracks locally - internal HDD/SSD or external NAS/USB -  then serving them to compatible renderers like in my case the Innuos Pulsar? Other than owning the music, is there a discernible quality in playback vs direct streaming?

that's interesting because I was told by a dealer at a reputable high-end store that in most cases music files bought and stored sounds better than streaming it.

Have him demonstrate that then, and maybe they just haven’t optimized their streaming setup, which is certainly not uncommon even at high-end dealers.  You’ve got a great streamer and often times the difference comes down to needing a better Ethernet and/or USB cable or a good switch, etc. to equalize the playing field because these things matter a lot and can significantly affect streaming performance.  There are plenty of people here with big $$$ systems who will tell you they can’t tell the difference between stored and streamed music, which makes sense since they are the same ones and zeroes all else being equal and if delivered optimally.

@soix lol let's not talk about USB cables! I'm going through a difficult process right now actually. I bought an Audience FrontRow USB A>B and I'm disappointed to say the least.  It's a good thing I kept my Ansuz X2 because even though the Audience is new and still breaking in I don't see myself happy with it. But I am having a really good experience with my custom Furutech power cord that replaced the Innuos Pulsar's factory cord.

In my system, I prefer the sound of locally stored music on an Antipodes K50 server/streamer.

My digital front-end, network devices, and cabling are high quality equipment that is configured correctly.

I use a Aurender N150, have probably 700 cds ripped in full .wav and lots of hi res downloads on the internal SSD. The sound from the SSD is so so much better than when I used to have my library on a NAS streaming over the network to my old streamer, night and day... It also sounds better than streaming Qobuz which I have on there too, internal SSD is the way to go

Hello fire_wzter, I can tell you from my experience that my stored hires files on my Aurender N10 internal storage sound better than most streaming from both Qobuz and Tidal. Reviews I've read have said the same thing for some reason the internal storage sounds best.  I cannot answer to the Innuos except that you give it a try. Some hires files sound amazing with more realism and better bass. Less digital and more analog like. If you have a good analog ( vinyl ) rig setup you'll understand what I mean. Good luck and cheers!
