It finally happened!

It's been quite awhile since I've contributed a post but I think it's about time. Since my last post I have changed several components of my system. I went from Von Schweikert vr4 MKIII Sr to Vandersteen 5A. I got an Aurender N10 streamer. I changed out my Belles Power Modules 350A amp for an Ayre V-5xe. I went to balanced cables from pre to amp. I thought it sounded pretty decent when I put in the Ayre. A couple of months after I visited another member of this site and heard his system. I left frustrated with mine. His was so spacious and airy and just right. I thought mine sounded good until I heard his. I wondered what else I was going to have to do to get there.  Maybe a different DAC? I have an Aqua La Voce S2. Maybe treatments? I just didn't know. Well... I had a 'Duh and a 'Aha' moment. My Belles A28 Reference preamp has selector switches of course on both input and output. When I put in my balanced cables it played and sounded better so I didn't do anything further. Something in my pea brain finally clicked! I needed to set my output switch to Balanced! Automatically better! Then I realized I had another pair of balanced cables and by golly! My DAC has balanced outputs! I hooked them up and set my input to balanced and was blown away! I know someone will think it should have been obvious. It's like I bought a whole new system!

Dadork ! ! I owe you ! A music revelation and motivated by your post !

I have been using Audioquest Golden Gate unbalanced cables for 12+ years in my system . . . How unfortunate !

After your post I switched to my balanced cables (made by Kent Maze, God rest his soul) that have been in the drawer since purchased about 10 years ago.

0MG . . . the change is truly unbelievable ! ! !

My system is MA252 int amp, MB-50 streamer, SonusFaber Olympica llls, and a pair of JL Audio Fathom 110s (using slave and master mode). Speaker cables and power cable also midline products by Kent Maze products. My listening position is 12 inches to right of center, 7’ from back wall, speakers spread 9’ feet wide with sub on left outside of speaker and right sub inside of speaker !

Test music all from Spotify . . Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, Neil Young Old Man Live at Massey Hall, Greg Allman, Last Silver Dollar from Laid Back, John Lee Hooker, Chill  Out, and Free Man in Paris by Joni Mitchell.  It’s like I’ve never heard this before

The sound is so clear and bass so deep I turned on the -12db filter on the subs!  Neil was sitting next to me and John was singing from the chair five feet in front of me  The voices are so clear, the sound field is impossibly wide (way outside the speakers) and so deep with the singers right out in front!  And , Tone Controls ? OFF . . . first time ever !

So, thank you dadort and Kent Maze !  Listening to music is now perfect ! I invite any Goners in Naples FL to stop by for a listen to John singing Deep Blue Sea !

@teboerio glad it helped! It certainly made a big difference in my system but mainly because I figured out the input and output settings finally. It should have been obvious I guess but whattya do?

In a way finally finding what should have been obvious is almost a part of the hobby. If everything was easy and came together almost automatically this hobby wouldn't be half the fun it is or as involving as it can be. Those duh moments can be most rewarding.
