Bob Weir

I just discovered that Bob Weir has passed. I’m really getting old. It seems like yesterday that I was at a show watching Bob, Jerry and Phil mixing it up on stage.

Another thing about the Europe 72 compilation release is that there were edits and studio overdubs added to almost all the live tracks, especially the vocals.

As far as the energy Bent added when he first joined the band, about a year ago I started listening heavily to shows from the second half of '79 and I was blown away. As far as I'm concerned, those six months or so are as good as any Dead I've ever heard. The whole band was on fire, but Garcia in particular was blazing hot. Check out the Buffalo show in November for a fine example of the period.

After Jerry passed Phil's bands definitely helped fill a big hole. From the mid-90s until they Greg died and the band broke up the Allman Brothers also had a spectacular run. There were a few blips when Dickey and the band were having problems, but when Warren and Derek took the helm they were just great. Saw many a show at the Beacon Theater during those years.

@ezwind I also felt the renewed energy when Brent came on the scene.  I felt that the band had to work harder to bring it all together, and that renewed focus upped the game.

I prefer in-tune vocals and tight ensemble playing, no matter what music I’m listening to, so the overdubs on Europe ’72 and the fact that the album is an anthology of cherry-picked performances rather than a single show are advantages, from my perspective.
