If you are set on sticking with your current speakers the nudge in the direction of current is a really good direction to look in. An amp having grip, control over speakers is as much about current as Watts. If you could find something like a Coda 11, that’s an amp that is in a different league than most of the recommendations. Some other recommendations for new or slightly used, Parasound A21 used, Paech Tree Audio (Class D). Of the recommendations already provided, Music Fidelity is really had to beat, especially used and if you snagged one of their integrated amps, M6, likely an overall upgrade to your Pre as well. Schitt from a dollars to performance ratio is about a good as it gets. Rogue is a great company. If you go with a Schitt their gear already offers such great value there isn’t a big discount used, new is the way to go, used though can allow you to jump into another class of product like the Coda. Good Luck.
used power amp under 1500
I started with a great system and I managed to downgrade it to an OK sound through a lot of trades, sales, questionable decisions and shrinking budget. (No regrets, it's been a fun journey.) I ended up with very low sensitivity, hard to drive speakers and now I need more power. Will 100 Watts be enough and is it OK and safe to buy used? Any brands that are a good value at $1500?

There is a CSi integrated Coda on EBay for around $ 2,000, maybe could be had for less. Says it was manufactured in 2009, you can call Coda an ask about longevity at its age and support for repair. Based on how Coda designs, builds their products, if you could buy this sub $ 2000 and coda says it should have a nice life span, extremely hard to beat the Pre / Amp combo. I had a CSiB integrated for a time and it was a beast that punched far above its weight class and had the current / watts to drive almost any speaker. You mentioned not liking Krell, most of their new gear would likely be outside your price range but… they design amps that are tailor made for what you are looking for, tons of current and watts that control and drive almost any speaker. Their XD line of amps are amazing but likely above budget. |
@mm1tt77 I did not mean I dislike Krell. I don’t know Krell. I try to stay away from cult-ish products, and also expensive ones (not by choice) and Krell is at least one of those too. Krell is probably awesome. I think what also influences me is the tone of ads for audio products. Some of them are passive agressive or even provocative. And many can be grouped by brand. Owners of high end audio products are often not the nicest group to put it lightly. For this, subconsciously, I have not clicked on Krell ads for years despite not removing it from my saved craigslist search url list of 20 or so brand. I agree with you on Parasound and MF. I shied away from Peachtree Audio, haven’t seen a lot of reviews. One more aspect of my choice: my speakers are about 35 years old now. They will go with my pretty heave usage in a couple years. Then I will either buy another pair of this magic used or have a high sensitivity speaker and sell the power amp I only needed for these ones. So the ability to resell is important, and I will take a 50% loss as I always do. @dishman442 thank you, are they listed somewhere? |
I’ve not listed the Kismit Khartago monos as it’s been quite crazy around here. Big beefy power supplies drove my home grown speakers quite nicely, despite them dropping below 2 ohms at 50 hz. Horrible load for an amp but the monos didn’t break a sweat. Reach out to chat if you wish. I’m not breathing hard on selling them but also not looking to make a ton off them. Klaus said they retailed at $5k the pair. What I paid was convoluted as I had my stereo chassis converted to mono, upgraded, and bought the second one to match |
