Understanding Class D

I’m still amazed at the myths of Class D sound.  When I ran ICEpower amps 10 years ago I’d have audiphiles come over to my apartment in San Francisco.  Not once did they ever say "Oh, I can tell because..... that this is Class D."

Truth is none of them could.

By extension, I have trouble believing that GaN amps are going to make anything very different in sound, but the desire for modernity in audio gear is ever-present.

I tried a few different class D amps, before I realized they could not drive my Acoustat 1+1 speakers. Class D power amps have trouble with a low Ohm draw (0.5 for the Acoustats). If I did not love these speakers I would consider a quality Class D amp. In truth, my entire system was built around the Acoustat 1+1 speakers.

I really enjoy my IOM class D amp and it drives my Thiels with ease…..lots of quiet, clean and cool power.

Excellent video. This fellow has a series of videos explaining various technical topics related to audio equipment-the best I've seen. He clearly is well educated in the field, but is able to discuss the topics in a very understandable manner. Very useful even for those who are relatively knowledgeable.
