I traded in my ARC Ref 3 Preamp and PH-7 phono preamp for Pass Labs XP30 preamp and XP-25 phono preamp. The Pass Labs are extremely clear, but I am having the same problem with treble. A friend came over and wanted to hear Springstein's "Dancing in the Dark." I felt like a cheese grater was playing havoc with my eardrums. I find if I turn up the capacitance on my phono preamp it helps a bit. But bottom line, tubes make bad recordings sound better, using a bit of friendly distortion. A friend told me that my system is now so transparent everything comes through, warts and all. I think I'd go back to a good tube system, but I've gotten to the point in life where I can no longer crawl and stoop in the 20" space behind my racks to change tubes. Good recordings, however, sound wonderful on my rig now. Better than tubes because of the clarity .
Old recordings sound poor on my Burmester 232
Burmester 232 is a fine machine. But for older recordings the sound is bright and poor compared to my Willsenton R8 which is excellent bang for buck and handles old recordings well Will adding a quality tube preamp to my 232 help? Is there any change I can make? My system is Burmester 232 + Focal Kanta 3s + LTA Aero DAC + Musical Fidelity MX streamer + Cardas clear reflection cables.

@amvroofing Made a couple of tweaks. Added the ifi lan silencer, ifi purifier pro and ifi ipower x to clean up my LAN signal, My system sounds significantly better now for bad recordings. Burmester 232 is indeed a hell of an integrated.. |
@audphile1 Are you kidding? Of course I am not abandoning Burmester. I have it in my Mercedes and it is superb. I cleaned my LAN signal up with a couple of products from ifi and the “bad” recordings sound much better now. An example of a “bad” recording would be Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. |
@dogearedaudio ”Bad” recording = Kashmir by Led Zep. Good recordings….most of the latest EDM and pop music. Anyway, my LAN tweaks have reduced the extra brightness. I am good to go for now. May upgrade my Kanta 3s later but that’s unlikely. |
