Moving up in the REL line of subwoofers

I currently have a set of the REL 812 subs which i am very pleased with.  However i have the audio virus of upgradeitis and am considering replacing them with the REL 212 double decker subs.  Anyone here have experience with that upgrade?

Thanks so much.

Thanks @ronkent.

I moved from the 212's to the Ref 31's.  I really liked the 212's, just found the 31's to offer slightly tighter/faster bass for 2-channel.  I'm really picky about sub integration.  IMO the wrong sub or poor setup for a sub(s) can do more harm than good, especially for 2-channel.  The 31's are not very good for HT.  Although I have HT capability, I really only use the setup for DVD concerts which I enjoy.  I added a JL Audio sub for LFE for the rare occasion we watch a movie.

I have 2 power plants because I wanted to have the headroom for 3 high current amps plus other components.  I have heard a difference in the past with amps plugged into power conditioners but after 3-4 trials thus far, I haven't been able to convince myself there is a difference with the regenerators.  SQ is the priority, but I intuitively like the "clean power" benefits and added protection beyond the whole house surge protector.

Btw, I can identify with your "upgradeitis" comment.  My position of "now I'm done" seems to have a half-life of only 12 mos. or so.  Unfortunately, I have this affliction with several other hobbies beyond audio!

All the best...

i am sure cars or watches are among the others?  i appreciate the advice on the 31's.   i am 99% music and i use my existing two channel system to watch movies and tv but SQ is not all that important to me in that area.

Favorite last words that many audio lovers say on a regular basis,  me included. is "that is it, i am done".  i have said that too many times but i do believe that as our systems get better and better,  it does get harder to really improve without spending way too much money.

@ronkent for 99% music you may want to consider the REL Carbon series as well.  Not quite as big a footprint as the 31/32’s but integrates equally as well IMO.  If I was going to do a 6-pack array this is the sub I would probably choose.

And yes, for hobbies you are spot on although I would have to add golf in there as well.  However, Golf differs in that there is less financial liability but higher frustration levels. I was fortunate to be able to retire early so I have way too much time on my hands.  I find my wine consumption is directly proportional to upgrades in SQ.  My wife now asks me to judge upgrades based on wine bottle %’s.  Major upgrades are typically worth 1/2 to a full bottle whereas minor ones are only 5% to 1/2 bottle.  She has always been more insightful than me!!!

Best of luck in your decisions...

I am 72 and i get the question a lot of when i am going to retire, and my answer i s always the same: "and do what,  i don't play golf".

most of my mad money goes to audio as it really is a never ending process.

Thanks for the advice again on the subs.  i am pleased with the sound i get but as I mentioned,  always looking for ways to improve the SQ.  the Carbon series would certainly be a step up from what i have.   Thanks.  Kent
