Is this the right forum for me?

Hello!

I just recently joined, searching for discussion on music and equipment.  Bought my first set of "high end" gear in 1972, a Marantz 2270 receiver.  Only recently sold it as I wasn't using it and it was just sitting on a shelf.

Had gone to Luxman equipment in the early 90's, and basically stuck with it until 2019, when I decided to get a new system.

I listened to a lot of gear at a local fine audio shop and decided on a modest set of equipment that fit my needs.  A fairly simple system, just a Naim Uniti Star which is an all-in-one CD player, streamer and integrated amp.  For speakers a set of Goldenear Reference.  I later added a Goldenear "Super Sub" to bring out the lows a bit better.  I added high end connection and power cables and a power conditioner.

The sound from this system is many steps up from what I had, but I realize it is not what some of you have after reading some of the posts.

My question is, am I worthy of being called an "Audiofile"?  I just turned 70 and I listen to music all the time, way more than TV or other media.  My hearing is not the best and I wear hearing aids, so my level of music enjoyment is somewhat compromised.

I do enjoy the discussions and reviews of high end equipment, just not sure I "fit in".  Thanks for your comments in advance!

Welcome! Some (Many) of us spend way too much, but ultimately I believe we are in this hobby to enjoy the music. If you enjoy the music on your system and are interested in finding ways (hopefully affordable) to increase that enjoyment, then you are in the right place.

Enjoy the journey!

I like this forum because folks here are less likely to get snotty over systems that are not top shelf.

Many of us do have very nice and expensive systems (mine is >$40K for example).

I was pretty happy with a bunch of home made gear for quite a while. So happy in fact that I am considering selling all my stuff and going back to a bunch of home made gear. An Audiophile is just someone who loves music and tinkering with the gear.

We have a few member who like to call some of us audiofools. They are mostly children, and should be treated as such :)

You will fit in just fine,

-Josh

I can add Audiogon is the only forums which was able to demonstrate that politeness is another distinguished form of intelligence and that friendship kill sectarian perspectives as well as discords...

My system is low cost and well optimized and no one here mocked it save rare dudes  demonstrating ignorance...

Feel not only welcome but  accepted  as you are and with what you own...

In Audiogon we know price has nothing to do, "almost", with "minimal acoustical satisfaction threshold" which can be reach at low cost modulo  optimization ...

@bipestuff

Welcome.

My daily search for intelligent life on planet earth often begins with this forum.  (The post above is a good example).

This group of smart (as in REALLY smart) individuals allows me to humbly comment from time to time. Unfortunately, I do take the liberty to insert feeble attempts at humor.  We've been at this digital thing for over 4 decades, and we're still stuck on "ones" and "zeros!!? You'd think we'd by up to latest 3, or 4 by now?

I'm 75 and functionally deaf in my left ear.  My right ear functions just well enough to hear the buzzer when the microwave is finished warming up my coffee.  I can't remember the last time I strapped myself in and "listened" to my reference system.  These days those 6'-4" speakers are used to articulate the risks of pharmaceuticals in the drug commercials between Hallmark Christmas movies. Good thing my wife sits next to me.  She helps me fill in the blanks during those highly complex movie plots.

You're new here.  It won't be long before you'll have excellent command of authentic audiophile gibberish.

Enjoy!

Welcome to Audiogon and keep an open mind. Remember only you are responsible for your own happiness ;-)
