@drrsutliff upu may be right. I’ve been searching for an arm that would be a better fit. Not sure yet.
Heavy cart on Technics GR
I’ve had this issue since I bought the cart but now I’m determined to get it set right.
I’m running a Phasemation PP-500 on Phasemation’s top end shell on a Technics SL1200GR (early version).
when I go to level the arm, even with the heavy aux weight it still doesn’t float. The cart end seems too heavy for the counter and aux weight to float the arm. So I set them all the way back to be as close I can guess to be, but then when I zero the knob and then the knob and weight to 2 grams it’s o my .25 grams according to my scale.
I'm told these carts have been used by Technics at shows so clearly im not doing something right. Sounds good to me but I want to make sure im not mashing the cantilever and suspension.

cleeds discussed the problem correctly, I think, but did he fail to take note of the weight of the standard Technics headshell? Because all that matters is the difference in weight between the standard Technics headshell and the Phasemation headshell, which if the Phasemation weighs only 13g, ought to only add a few grams to the calculation. As for the counterweight, the CW adds to effective mass by a factor equal to the square of the distance of its center of mass from the pivot multiplied by the weight of the CW. So, to minimize effective mass, you want the heaviest CW so you can get it as close as possible to the pivot. Like someone else already said, use a digital VTF gauge, not the markings on the tonearm, to set VTF. Taking all that into consideration, is there still a problem? |
@lewm I can only answer that there is a calculator on KAB’s site for the heavier aux weights. The formula given is SS follows: “Heavy cartridges like Ortofon SPU require a more substantial Aux weight to use them in the 1200 Tonearm. |
@gochurchgo , if you are going to order the extra weights from KAB would suggest you order the 8 dollar arm dampener and damping trough. Both very worthwhile improvements on the G. |
@johnss I will look into it |
