Speaker Positioning

Should I consider floor standing speakers with a recommended (by manufacturer) minimum distance from side wall of 36 inches if my max only allows for 24? Just wondering how critical this type of guidance is...

The beauty about speaker placement is that experimentation is free. Use the manufacture's recommendation as a starting point.  Speaker placement is VERY room dependent.

What happened the Spendor D2s? From your VS photo, placement looks about right. You might bring them forward a foot and move them 4-6 inches away from the side walls. With no toe-in.

I see you asked about Fyne 703s in a September post. The manual says 3 feet minimum. Your room is too small for a balanced frequency response at decent volumes. Size matters.
