Help me choose: Harbeth 30.2 or SHL5+ XD in a 10 x 13 feet room?

Hello everyone,

Need some guidance on speaker selection. I am primarily targeting Harbeth. Open to others’ opinions. For this discussion appreciate experienced feedback on these two speakers. Sharing my room and audio setup details below.

Room:

Dimensions: 9.7 ft (W) × 12.5 ft (L)

Ceiling: Cathedral, 9.6 ft peak

Floor: Pergo Laminated, 5.5 x 9 ft rug in center only

Speakers: Tontrager Stand on bare floor, not rug

Front wall: LG G5 77" TV + Nakamichi Dragon Sounbar. Butcher Block Acoustics stands and rack.

Rear wall: Window behind MLP, curtained.

Listening distance: ~5 - 7 ft

My Audio SYSTEM:

Main speakers - to be determined. Need your opinion.

Amp: Synthesis A100 Titan (KT66, 100 W @ 6Ω)

DAC: Holo May KTE

Streamer: HiFi Rose RS130

Subwoofer: REL S/510 (planned)

Cables: Audio Note Lexus 96, DH Labs Air Matrix Cryo, Mirage USB

Taste in Music: Vocals, acoustic jazz, classical, opera, Tool/Dream Theater

Given the room volume is small,  does it make sense to go with M30.2 or M30.3 and pair it with REL S/510, or SHL5PLUS XD or XD2? Which speakers will be optimal for best outcomes? 90% of the time I listen to vocals, jazz, and Acoustics.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

I own the C7s. In my experience they have the best soundstage and open transparency of the Harbeths I’ve  heard including the 5 and 30 models. The low end on the C7 is very close to the 5 and doesn’t need a sub.

I don't have experience with either Harbeth, but was in the same situation as you: 11' X 12' room and listening primarily to acoustical. Listening position 7' from speakers. Based on the glowing reviews of the Harbeth SHL5+ and what I listen to, I had decided on those speakers. But I was concerned about my small room.
So I emailed Harbeth UK. They were extremely helpful relative to which Harbeth to select . You may want to send them a message.
I have the SHL5+ on order. I do have extensive room treatment, which may be something to consider. Good luck.

Great suggestions and discussions. Thank you. Let's hear some more perspectives.  I will contact Harbeth.

Hmmm, based on your thread from a couple of months ago....you should have had something halfway decent with the Electa Amator and Rel, should probably stick with it and figure out how to enhance something else there...

But, if you managed to mess that up somehow, it could get way worse with the Harbeth downgrades ( Harb's a lousier speaker to begin with).

Hi everyone,

I am new to this  I've been considering this arrangement for my 12 x 12 foot room with a cathedral type ceiling (approximately 15 feet high). I generally enjoy Instrumental and Vocal Jazz, Acoustic pieces, arias, and claasic rock. I want to build the system around the amplifier and speakers. I found the Amator III and Tube combo interesting. Appreciate your feedback.

* **Speakers** – Sonus faber Electa Amator III

* **Amplifier** – Synthesis Action A100 Titan

* **Subwoofers** – REL Classic 98 (x2)

* **Primary DAC** – Holo May KTE

* **Reference DAC** – RME ADI-2 FS

* **Internal DAC** – Wolfson WM8741 (integrated in A100 Titan)

* **Digital Transport/Streamer** – HiFi Rose RS130

* **Turntable** – Pro-Ject Debut PRO B

* **Phono Preamp** – Moon 110LP v2

* **DSP Processor** – miniDSP SHD Studio (with Dirac Live)

I have a headphone setup with Hifiman Arya, RME ADI-2 DAC, and Topping A90. I enjoy that immensely.

I am looking for suggestions, opinions, and optimization to my planned setup. I am not yet fully decided on the Turntable, phono preamp, and DSP.

Thanks in advance.

I have not heard either Harberh alternatives in a room as small as yours so I can only hazard a guess.  The 30.2 seem to be easier to get to sound good.  The SLH5 seem to be harder to place and seem to be more picky about amps.  Your A100 is a killer good amp so I would not worry that much about amp choice.  I think either choice would be good.  I would also look into something like Audio Note AN-J, particularly if you plan to place the speakers near the back wall and/or corners.  I am not a bass freak so I would not bother with subwoofers.  Your alternatives can deliver plenty bass and subwoofers are more apt to mess up coherence and make the sound worse.
