along with improving acoustics.

I’ve owned a fair share of class D amps and have auditioned dozens more. I’ve yet to hear one perform in any fashion I would describe as “improved,” relative to a well designed AB amp. One trait I’ve noticed in all of them is poor performance in the lowest octave. Regardless of how they measure on paper, they cannot seem to reproduce those lowest 20Hz with any real authority. It’s as though all of them have a steep roll off that begins around 30Hz. Even the latest Purifi and Hypex modules share this trait IME. And I’ve consistently noticed that class D power tends to sound about half as powerful as AB power in practice. In other words, a 300 WPC class D amp will typically sound about as powerful as a 150 WPC AB amp. In the case of amps like the Bel Canto E1X which I had for in-home audition more recently, they sound about 1/3rd as powerful as my AB amp rated for the same output.

I am a big believer in technological advancements, so will continue to periodically give class D a chance to convert me. It just hasn’t yet, not even close.
