Personality

I now find myself streaming most of the time. Although the SQ is really good, I realize there’s something missing.  When I pull out a record or CD, each one seems to have a uniqueness or personality of its own which reflects when I first bought it or played it.  Also each one seems to have a sound signature which I associate with it, making it more personal.  I don’t get that with streaming

Does anyone else feel this way?

Interesting suggestion!

I know the writer by name but never read him...

Thanks very much...

mahgister, although, strictly speaking not a by a ’Russian author', since you mentioned ’dying’ you might enjoy ’The Fixer’, a 1966 novel by Bernard Malamud, which depicts the working of the Russian Judicial system, at least for Jews. It made a lasting impression on me!

I think we have a similar appreciation of knowledge. While I read or listen most books these days, my library of literature in leather bound (Easton and some other press) are among my most prized possessions. My partner and I are most comfortable when close or in a university. She went to Brown, she is much smarter than I.

It is what makes humans unique the ability to learn and understand... so, at least for a few of us it is the ultimate expressions of being human, an certainly the most wonderful thing in my life... well, and creating art, solving problems and looking over the edge.

yes

I am pretty sure i will like your listening room, library and conversation...

My older possession is a 1516 book of law by John Rastell. Abbreviamentum legum Anglorum. I guess it was a book on the General  Wolfe boat attacking quebec in 1759 with a lawyer on this boat owning it for application of the Kings law on these french colonized new subjects.

Very fascinating book written for 1/3 in old french,  1/3 in Latin and old English.. For exemple there is an entry  called in French : "la bâtardise"smiley

A souvenir of the past and the oldest book i stumble into ...

My  other next favorite which i own  was the "bibliotheque portative  du voyageur"  created by order of Napoleon for his officers:

The choice of the writers in this bookcase was made by Napoleon personally for the pleasure and education of his officers. It is a stunning object....I dont have the case in wood.Only a cardboard original...The books are very small, few inches, and the case is not big... Astonishing clue about Napoleon caring for culture...

But my personal books are almost all books in science, philosophy, poetry, linguistics or mathematics....Nothing leather bounded except these one and nothing beautiful....

I could not kept my  many thousands books... Only 500 as a core of books which changed my life ...

I agree that there is something about CD sound quality that is ever so slightly better than streamer’s. It’s such a subtle difference in clarity.  I do prefer listening to CD’s for critical listening.

@mahgister

Very cool book case!

We used to keep thousands of books with book cases in every bedroom and study (like floor to ceailimg). With the advent of the iPad we quickly switched and started getting ride of books so we could have a house that liked more like a residence. I kept my astronomy, geology, chaos theory, many history, and early (late 1990s consciousness, developmental psychology itc) and of course my literature books.

I would think you have the personality to collect old / first addition (where options exist) versus me who focus on new. I have always been on the forefront of exploring technology. It would be great fun to get together. It would be possible, but my partner is disabled and can’t leave the house so I need to stay here. If you get near Portland OR… give me a holler. I’ve had a couple of audiogoners visit.
