I own Wilson Watt/Puppy 8 and I power them with two Tube McIntosh Mc275 in monoblock mode and a McIntosh C2300 tube preamp inside a huge living room/bar area with a very tall Cathedral Ceiling. They can go very, very loud, have a great sound stage, big bass, smooth treble, and overall, they sound glorious. Some people have told me that it is the best sound they have ever heard, however, only one was a true audiophile. I used to have ML Electrostats with a sub-woofer and I retired the subwoofer when I got the Wilsons. No subwoofer needed or wanted. The punch with the Wilson W/P 8 is fantastic, and of course, was non-existant with the Electrostats. I truely believe it is a great match for my huge room. I run the amps on the 8 ohm tap, which is halved in monoblock mode to 4 ohm. I have also tried the 4 ohm tap which is halved to 2 ohm in monoblock mode, but, I liked the 8 ohm tap (halved to 4 ohm) much better. I have heard that the Mc275 works well with speakers that dip into low ohms, and my ears tell me this is the case. Of course, running two of them also minimizes any potential issue. In my case, I bought all three pieces used over the last decade+ or so... This approach could meet your financial criteria. At any rate, depending on the size of your room, I think going with tube monoblocks can really help the dynamic range of the Wilson W/P 8. Note: pushing the Wilson W/P 8s as far apart as reasonably possible greatly increases the sound stage. Here is a pic:
