Bass Traps

Anyone familiar with these 2 types of bass traps?

Synergistic Research Black Box and PSI AUDIO AVAA C214

I'm in the process of implementing room treatment and have decided on 32x32x6 hollow felt box clouds stuffed with 6" Rockwool Safe and Sound acoustic insulation.  This will offer an NRC value of 1.25. These panels are manufactured with WAF in mind,  not that I actually need my wife's approval lol

But as far as controlling the bass, given the aesthetics of my room I'm limited in what I can and want to do. So I'm wondering how effective these two types of bass traps actually perform. Those huge passive black foam blocks and wedges won't work with the aesthetics of my room.  Let's not pretend they are anything but conspicuous and visually disruptive.

Again I'm looking for feedback on the Synergistic Research Black Box and PSI AUDIO AVAA C214

Thanks!

I heard the Synergistic Black Box demonstrated at AXPONA a few years ago (I have not heard the PSI). It made a very subtle difference and I actually liked the sound better with it turned off. Some other people in the room seemed to hear more effect than I did and some said they really liked it.

I've always been somewhat suspicious of Synergistic but that demonstration was very interesting. It was conducted by Ted Denney, the founder. I couldn't hear any difference with the HF-Ts but when he demonstrated the FEQ tower gizmos (the older version) I had to pick my jaw off the floor. They made a huge difference in the soundstage - improving it in every way. I hope to hear them again. It was one of the most impressive demonstrations at the show.

I don't think I misinterpreted what the author had to say.

"In every instance (stereo or multichannel, with or without DiracLive) and with almost every music selection, the effect of the AVAA C214s is beneficial, though in most cases (despite all that I have written) it is subtle"

can you not DIY? @fire_water

Also room treatment is not based on vibes  but rigorous scientific and iterative processes

I guess I can buy the Primacoustic FullTrap bass trap and place it on the front wall like their engineer suggested.  Bit it's not a very appealing box so I'd have to build a new cabinet out of solid wood and replace the fabric with a white one.  I'm paying extra money to have it blend in with my room!  That's just dumb.  Lol

Well, you certainly did not misquote me! smiley

However, that was a proviso inserted because I feared that my general enthusiasm might raise excessive expectations.  It works well but it is not panacea.
