Looking for speakers in a large vaulted great room
I have a large great room that we are building that will have the dining room in between the great room and the kitchen. The 2 rooms combined will be about 21’ wide by 30’ long to the edge of the kitchen. The room is vaulted, and will have a wall of glass, sliding glass doors and windows on one side leading to the outside. Needless to say this is not an ideal listening room, but I would like to have some speakers that fill the space with music. I am not trying to do surround sound, just 2 channel from one end, opposite the kitchen. There will be a fireplace at that end, and I could do floor speakers or bookshelf, although there will be a window on either side of the fireplace, so the bookshelf speaker would have to sit on top of a built in-cabinet below the windows. Not looking to add anything to the walls, trying to make the room an enjoyable space with great sounding music. Willing to look at used speakers as well. Any thoughts?

did you ever hear Bose 901’s? My neighbor had them, I refer to them as ’Stereo Everywhere’, it’s a very unique sound https://www.tonepublications.com/review/we-review-the-bose-901/ They are not close, 3-1/2 hrs away, but a working pair in decent shape is rare I suspect, it would be very easy to refinish the tops, or have a piece of glass/stone cut
well, theres a lot more of them around if the wife likes their look https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/103078413065161/search?query=bose%20901%20speakers |
@elliottbnewcombjr great info. I remember the old Bose 901’s. The open baffles won’t fly, but I would like to hear them. I’ll look at the rest, thanks for the time. |
@nashvegastitan agreed with others - tekton moab or if you can find a steal out there, ulfbehrts. Or if you're up to the notion, you could get double impacts for now at $3000 and then add some tekton or rhythmik subs down the line if you need the low end, as that's the main thing a larger speaker will provide (more spl in the mid and sub bass frequencies typically) although you could experience a larger soundstage with the larger speaker as well. If you can afford the $5k, moabs for sure. I'm not familiar with any super high efficiency horns for this price so I will stay out of that discussion although I can see why horns would be nice in a larger space with the directivity they provide. Please keep us posted on what you decide and how you like them! Love to hear the audiophile's journey. Best of luck to you!

For your room, Martin-Logan electrostatic hybrids would be my choice. They being a line source (panel), the sound only decreases by 3 dB with each doubling of distance, as opposed to a point source (which is most every cone, dome, and horn speaker) whose sound pressure decreases by 6 dB with each doubling of distance. This allows for a panel speaker to much more easily fill a large space with a more consistent loudness than a conventional speaker. Martin-Logan’s, having a transparent panel, will not dominate the room decor like a big wooden box, and will let the room light circulate. Glass windows behind? Pleated draperies or shades are ideal for serious listening and can be pulled for the view. Not to mention, Martin-Logan’s are particularly suited and sound fantastic in large spaces, are easy to drive with their powered woofers (with DSP!). And, not needing a Herculean enclosure to deal with box resonances, are noticeably less expensive than comparable box speakers at that elevated performance level. |
